I have got a letter for school saying my daughter is going to be excluded. What can I do?

This information applies to Scotland

Exclusion from school should only be used as a last resort. In Scotland, a school can exclude a pupil if it believes that:-

  • the pupil is refusing to comply with schools discipline or rules
  • the pupil is seriously disrupting the education of other pupils in the school.

First, you should discuss with the school the reasons why it is excluding your daughter. If you are not satisfied with its answer, you (or your daughter if she is over 12) can appeal to the education authority. If you are still not satisfied with the outcome, you have a right of appeal to the sheriff court.

While a pupil is excluded the education authority still has a duty to educate the child.

For more information about exclusions, see Problems at school.
For more information about organisations that can help if a pupil has been excluded, see Education organisations which give information and advice.
