Extra concessions if you have a blue badge

If you are a blue badge holder you may be eligible for extra concessions, such as exemption from road tax.

This page explains what extra concessions might be available for blue badge holders in Northern Ireland.

Road tax

If you have a blue badge and meet certain other criteria, you may not have to pay road tax.

To qualify, the vehicle must only be used by you or on your behalf, and one of the following must apply:

  • you receive the higher rate mobility component of disability living allowance (DLA)
  • you are undergoing long-term hospital treatment and have only had your DLA higher rate mobility component removed because of this
  • you receive war pensioners’ mobility supplement
  • you are aged 65 and over, applied for exemption before 13 October 1993 under the Disabled Passenger Scheme and continue to meet the conditions of this scheme.

You can only be exempt from paying road tax for one vehicle at any one time. The vehicle must be registered in your name or someone authorised to act on your behalf.

If you are no longer entitled to one of the specified benefits, exemption from paying road tax ceases.

Wheel clamping

If your vehicle is displaying a valid blue badge, it must not be wheel-clamped on the public highway if a valid badge is on display.

Your vehicle cannot be clamped on private land. It is a condition of the licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) for all clamping companies, which are also called vehicle immobilisers.

Tolls at road bridges and tunnels

If you have a valid blue badge, you do not have to pay tolls at certain road bridges and tunnels.
