Financial help for students aged 16-19

This information applies to England

If you're aged 16-19 and at school or college, you might be able to get help with money.

There are different kinds of help you might be able to get, including:

  • Education Maintenance Allowance (if you're aged 16-18, see below)
  • a bursary (see below)
  • help with childcare costs
  • dance and drama awards
  • help with transport costs
  • help if you're studying away from home.

Education Maintenance Allowance

The Education Maintenance Allowance scheme closed to new applicants from 1 January 2011. However if you successfully applied for the Allowance in 2009/10 or 2010/11 you will continue to get it while you study in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Bursaries

From September 2011, schools and colleges will have funds to award bursaries to people aged 16-19 who need help. If you're in care, a care leaver, or are on income support, or receiving both Employment and Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance, you will receive a bursary of £1,200 a year from your school or college.

If you are not in one of these groups you can still apply for a bursary from your school or college but any award will be made at the school or college's discretion, who will also decide what conditions students should meet to receive a bursary, for example, linked to behaviour or attendance.

You can find out more about the help you might get and how to apply for it on the Directgov website at: (New window) www.moneytolearn.direct.gov.uk.
