Tax deadline – 31 January 2009 - In England

If you have to send in a self assessment tax return, don't forget to do it by the deadline of 31 January 2009.

If you miss the deadline, you'll have to pay a £100 penalty and interest.

If you are registered for 'Self Assessment Online', you can file your return easily and securely up until midnight on 31 January. For more information, go to the HM Revenue And Customs website at: (New window) www.hmrc.gov.uk.

As we get nearer to the deadline, HM Revenue and Customs is warning of a very professional scam going on at the moment. You are contacted by someone claiming to be HMRC, told you are entitled to a tax refund and asked for your personal bank details. But HMRC say that they never use email to contact taxpayers about a refund. If you get an email pretending to be from HMRC, don't open it and send it to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.  If in doubt, check with (New window) HMRC.
